The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most popular safari destination and for good reason. It is a vast reserve of endless flat grassland crossed by rivers which play host to wildlife’s most spectacular moments. Its biggest draw card is the Wildebeest Migration when vast hordes of Wildebeest roar through the park bringing in its trail a wake of mighty predators. In Maasai Mara during the migration pick a spot by the river and watch enraptured as crocs and lions compete to pick-off stragglers from the clattering herds of wildebeest.

Optional Maasai Mara Balloon Ride: for those going for the balloon safari,  you will be going for the early morning balloon, you will be picked at the hotel by the Balloon Company at 5.30am and drive to the balloon launch site where you will gather for takeoff. Enjoy early morning ballooning over the plains, getting a bird’s eye view of the game below as the sun creeps slowly over the horizon. After approximately one hour aloft, the balloon lands while a breakfast is being prepared for us nearby.  The smell of bacon, sausages and eggs drift on the breeze as we sample exotic Kenyan fruits and homemade pastries and, if you wish, glasses of bubbly to toast our flight, a tradition initiated by the Montgolfier brothers.

DAY 3: FULL DAY IN SAMBURU GAME RESERVE

Enjoy a full day of African game viewing and bird watching.  The Samburu Game Reserve offers what is arguably Kenya’s greatest – and least changed – encounter with the wild Africa of yesteryear.  This harsh, savagely beautiful wilderness depends on the steady flow of the Uaso Nyiro River for its existence.  The river waters house a wide variety of animal species not found south of the Equator including the majestic Beisa Oryx, the reticulated giraffe, the thin-striped Gravy’s zebra, and the ‘giraffe-necked’ gerenuk antelope, which stands on its hind legs to feed.  Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard can all be seen along the river. The 400-plus species of birds complete the perfect experience in Samburu. This is the home of the Samburu tribe, cousins of the Maasai, who share the same nomadic, cattle-herding existence, and an even stricter adherence to their age-old rites and customs.

In the evening have a Boma dinner in Samburu.

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most popular safari destination and for good reason. It is a vast reserve of endless flat grassland crossed by rivers which play host to wildlife’s most spectacular moments. Its biggest drawcard is the Wildebeest Migration when vast hordes of Wildebeest roar through the park bringing in its trail a wake of mighty predators. If you’re lucky enough to be in Masai Mara during the migration pick a spot by the river and watch enraptured as crocs and lions compete to pick-off stragglers from the clattering herds of wildebeest.

This is an add on service and Optional. Cost Person: $450

Swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro’s melting snows form permanent watering places for the wildlife through times of drought.

DAY 2: NAIROBI SIGHTSEEING TOUR

After breakfast visit the Karen Blixen Museum. Located in Karen, the beautiful Nairobi suburb that was once part of Karen Blixen’s vast coffee estate, “Mbogani” was Karen’s home from 1917 until 1931. The house and grounds were made famous by the film “Out of Africa”. Visitors have a glimpse of typical colonial life in Kenya at the turn of the twentieth century. As well as many of Karen’s original belongings, replicas replace items that have been lost over the years. At the front of the house the original millstone tables can be seen from which Karen conducted much of her farm business.

This morning we will also visit the Giraffe Centre, headquarters for AFEW, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. Made famous by Daisy Rothschild, a giraffe calf rescued from Soi on the border of Western Kenya, Giraffe Manor was established in 1983 as a sanctuary for the then endangered Rothschild giraffe. There is also the opportunity to learn more about giraffe at the interpretation center and hand-feed them while watching the semi-tame family of warthogs snuffle around their hooves in search of tidbits.

After lunch at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden, this afternoon we will visit the Bomas of Kenya, located just a few kilometers from the city center. Bomas is a Swahili word for villages and the Bomas of Kenya contains numerous homesteads reflecting Kenya’s cocktail of cultures, faithfully recreated for visitors to see traditional village life of the many Kenyan communities. There will be a display of traditional dances, music and other folklore traditional songs in a splendid arena. Late this afternoon we will return to Nairobi for the evening.

A full day is spent game viewing and exploring this natural wonder with a visit to the Mara River where the wildebeest migration takes place. Here you can see both the hippos and the crocodiles that co exist in the same waters.

This is an add on service and Optional. Cost Person: $450

DAY 06: MOMBASA /TSAVO EAST

Early breakfast and then start your journey upcountry towards Tsavo East National Park. Enter Tsavo  with a game drive en-route for check-in and lunch. Afternoon game-drive in the park. The joint mass of Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks forms one of the largest National Parks in the world and covers a massive 4% of Kenya’s total land area. The sheer scale of Tsavo gives the visitor a chance to really get away from it all, and to explore the wild in total solitude. On safari here you will see large herds of Elephant, their hides often a luminous red with dust, as well as Lion, Buffalo, Eland, Giraffe Impala, Kudu and possibly Rhinoceros. Tsavo is a birdwatcher’s paradise with numerous species of weavers, hornbills, sunbirds, rollers, and raptors commonly seen. One of Tsavo’s most interesting geographical features is the Lugard Falls, where white water rages through a series of spectacular rock formations.

If time allows, you have the privilege of see the following;

  • Aruba Dam:-The beautiful Aruba dam, located on the north bank of the seasonal Voi River, is visited by thousands of animals and makes a great game-viewing destination.
  • Mudanda Rock:-This whale-backed rock towers above a natural dam, which acts as a draw to hundreds of elephant.
  • The longest lava flow in the world:- At 300 kilometers in length, the heat-shimmering edge of the Yatta Plateau is the longest lava flow in the world and an ornithological paradise that attracts migrating birds from all over the world.
  • Lugard’s Falls:-Named after Captain Lugard, the first proconsul to East Africa, the Falls feature a bizarrely eroded rock neck through which the waters of the Galana River plunge into foaming rapids and crocodile-infested pools.

DAY 07: TSAVO EAST/TSAVO WEST

Breakfast at the lodge and depart for Tsavo West National Park, with game drive en-route. Arrival and check-in. Afternoon games drive in the park and visit to Mzima Sprigs. These natural springs produce 50 million gallons of fresh sparkling water daily. These waters are alive with shoals of barbel and Hippopotamus and waterfowl. A unique underwater observatory has been built that gives you an incredible view of this crystal clear underwater world, where massive hippos glide silently through swirling shoals of barbel. These springs have created a sprawling wetland paradise of giant Raphia palms and oases alive with waterbirds.

If time allows us, we shall take you to the following attraction;

  • The Magic Mzima Springs:- The lush, hippo- heaving pools of Mzima Springs, fed daily by 250 million litres of water gushing from the lava flows of the Chyulu Hills provide an oasis of green, an underwater hippo viewing chamber, two nature trails and some unique picnic spots.
  • Ancient lands of lions and lava:-Tsavo achieved notoriety in 1898 when “the man-eaters of Tsavo”, a pair of rogue man-eating lions, preyed gruesomely on the builders of the Uganda Railway. Today the Park is more famous for the numerous prides of maneless lions that patrol the plains and police the herbivore herds.
  • A vibrant volcanic arena:-The molten lava that forms the Shetani Lava Flow spewed from the earth just 200 years ago and its fiery fury was thought by the local people to be the work of the Devil, hence its name which means ‘Devil’ in Swahili. The Chaimu Crater is an alternative volcanic arena (which can be climbed by those who feel fit enough), as are the imposing Ngulia Hills and the enchanting Chyulu Hills.
