Swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro’s melting snows form permanent watering places for the wildlife through times of drought.

Day 2: Nairobi Sightseeing (Karen Blixen/Giraffe Centre/Bomas Of Kenya)

After breakfast this morning we visit the Karen Blixen Museum. Located in Karen, the beautiful Nairobi suburb that was once part of Karen Blixen’s vast coffee estate, “Mbogani” was Karen’s home from 1917 until 1931. The house and grounds were made famous by the film “Out of Africa”. Visitors have a glimpse of typical colonial life in Kenya at the turn of the twentieth century. As well as many of Karen’s original belongings, replicas replace items that have been lost over the years. From the beautiful gardens there are magnificent views of the Ngong Hills, held dear by Karen and described so tenderly in her writings. At the front of the house the original millstone tables can be seen from which Karen conducted much of her farm business.

This morning we will also visit the Giraffe Centre, headquarters for AFEW, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. Made famous by „Daisy Rothschild, a giraffe calf rescued from Soi on the border of Western Kenya, Giraffe Manor was established in 1983 as a sanctuary for the then endangered Rothschild giraffe. The breeding program has been a great success and visitors can now watch these gentle giants at eye level from a raised platform. There is also the opportunity to learn more about giraffe at the interpretation center and hand-feed them while watching the semi-tame family of warthogs snuffle around their hooves in search of tidbits.

After lunch at the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden, this afternoon we will visit the Bomas of Kenya, located just a few kilometers from the city center. Bomas is a Swahili word for villages and the Bomas of Kenya contains numerous homesteads reflecting Kenya’s cocktail of cultures, faithfully recreated for visitors to see traditional village life of the many Kenyan communities. There will be a display of traditional dances, music and other folklore traditional songs in a splendid arena. Late this afternoon we will return to Nairobi for the evening.

Today we will explore the Park which covers only 150 square miles, yet, despite its small size, its fragile ecosystem supports a wide range of mammals (well over 50 of the larger species) and birds (over 400 species).  Years ago this was the locale around which such famous writers as Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark spun their stories of big-game hunting in the wilds of Africa.  It is also the home of the Maasai people. Swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro’s melting snows form permanent watering places for the wildlife through times of drought.

The house and grounds were made famous by the film “Out of Africa”. Visitors have a glimpse of typical colonial life in Kenya at the turn of the twentieth century. As well as many of Karen’s original belongings, replicas replace items that have been lost over the years. At the front of the house the original millstone tables can be seen from which Karen conducted much of her farm business.

We will also visit the Giraffe Centre, headquarters for AFEW, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. Made famous by „Daisy Rothschild, a giraffe calf rescued from Soi on the border of Western Kenya, Giraffe Manor was established in 1983 as a sanctuary for the then endangered Rothschild giraffe. Days 5: Full Day in Samburu Game Reserve

Enjoy a full day of African game viewing and bird watching.  The Samburu Game Reserve offers what is arguably Kenya’s greatest – and least changed – encounter with the wild Africa of yesteryear.  This harsh, savagely beautiful wilderness depends on the steady flow of the Uaso Nyiro River for its existence.  The river waters house a wide variety of animal species not found south of the Equator including the majestic Beisa Oryx, the reticulated giraffe, the thin-striped Grevy’s zebra, and the ‘giraffe-necked’ gerenuk antelope, which stands on its hind legs to feed.  Elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard can all be seen along the river. The 400-plus species of birds complete the perfect experience in Samburu. This is the home of the Samburu tribe, cousins of the Maasai, who share the same nomadic, cattle-herding existence, and an even stricter adherence to their age-old rites and customs.

Day 4 & 5: Two Full Days In Maasai Mara National Reserve

The next two days will be  spent in the reserve with both morning and afternoon game drives. As one of the New Wonders or the World, Maasai Mara National Reserve offers an absolutely unique variety of animals. The reason is that this hilly region is both humid and fertile, and is crossed by the rivers Mara and Telek, full of crocodiles and hippos, which carry water the whole year round. The banks of the rivers are covered in thick forest, which gradually makes way for bush and grassland. The abundance of water and excellent availability of food are the reasons why the Maasai Mara, which in fact is a continuance of the Tanzanian Serengeti National Park, has the greatest population of wild animals in the whole of Africa. There is a particularly dramatic “spectacle” from July to November, the annual migration of huge herds of Gnus and Zebras. Predators such as Hyenas, Jackals, Leopards and Lions of course, closely follow these herds. There is no place where more of these latter may be soon than in Maasai Mara. Gigantic herds of over 200 buffaloes can also be observed. Plenty of food is available for elephants, giraffes, and the many species of antelopes and gazelles all of which can be observed in their natural habitat.

Optional Maasai Mara Balloon Ride: for those going for the balloon safari,  you will be going for the early morning balloon, you will be picked at the hotel by the Balloon Company at 5.30am and drive to the balloon launch site where you will gather for takeoff. • A vibrant volcanic arena:-The molten lava that forms the Shetani Lava Flow spewed from the earth just 200 years ago and its fiery fury was thought by the local people to be the work of the Devil, hence its name which means ‘Devil’ in Swahili. The Chaimu Crater is an alternative volcanic arena (which can be climbed by those who feel fit enough), as are the imposing Ngulia Hills and the enchanting Chyulu Hills.

After breakfast visit the Karen Blixen Museum. At the front of the house the original millstone tables can be seen from which Karen conducted much of her farm business.

This morning we will also visit the Giraffe Centre, headquarters for AFEW, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. Made famous by Daisy Rothschild, a giraffe calf rescued from Soi on the border of Western Kenya, Giraffe Manor was established in 1983 as a sanctuary for the then endangered Rothschild giraffe.

The Masai Mara is Kenya’s most popular safari destination and for good reason. It is a vast reserve of endless flat grassland crossed by rivers which play host to wildlife’s most spectacular moments. Its biggest draw card is the Wildebeest Migration when vast hordes of Wildebeest roar through the park bringing in its trail a wake of mighty predators. If you’re lucky enough to be in Masai Mara during the migration pick a spot by the river and watch enraptured as crocs and lions compete to pick-off stragglers from the clattering herds of wildebeest.

Optional Maasai Mara Balloon Ride: for those going for the balloon safari,  you will be going for the early morning balloon, you will be picked at the hotel by the Balloon Company at 5.30am and drive to the balloon launch site where you will gather for takeoff. After approximately one hour aloft, the balloon lands while a breakfast is being prepared for us nearby.  The smell of bacon, sausages and eggs drift on the breeze as we sample exotic Kenyan fruits and homemade pastries and, if you wish, glasses of bubbly to toast our flight, a tradition initiated by the Montgolfier brothers. Swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro’s melting snows form permanent watering places for the wildlife through times of drought.

Day 7: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

Today we will explore the Park which covers only 150 square miles, yet, despite its small size, its fragile ecosystem supports a wide range of mammals (well over 50 of the larger species) and birds (over 400 species).  Years ago this was the locale around which such famous writers as Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark spun their stories of big-game hunting in the wilds of Africa.  It is also the home of the Maasai people. Swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaro’s melting snows form permanent watering places for the wildlife through times of drought.
